CNC machining price is mainly affected by setup time, machining cycle time, material, tolerance, finish, inspection, packing and quantity.
Setup cost is spread across fewer parts
Even one prototype part needs drawing review, CAM programming, tool setup, material preparation, machining time, deburring and inspection. When quantity is one or two pieces, those fixed costs cannot be spread out.
Prototype risk is higher
First-time parts often have unclear tolerances, possible design changes, finish uncertainty or assembly questions. The supplier must spend more time reviewing manufacturability before production.
Inspection still matters
A sample is often used to validate fit and function, so critical dimensions may need careful inspection even when the quantity is very low.
